Meet the Lennox Candidates 2024

1.            Please introduce yourself. Who are you? What is your connection to Lennox?

I’m Thihan Chandramohan, a long-term resident of Richmond, physiotherapist, small business owner, and candidate for Lennox Ward. My professional background is in sports rehabilitation, and I’m passionate about the well-being of our community. After a motorbike accident in January left me with a broken leg, I spent time convalescing at home in Richmond, which reignited my deep connection to the people, local businesses, and open spaces that make this area so unique. Having worked in professional sport, I now want to apply my skills to improve governance, ensure fiscal responsibility, and make sure the community’s voice is heard. My campaign is built on transparency, community engagement, and support for local businesses.

2.            How would you resolve traffic and movement issues in Lennox Ward, including congestion, pedestrian access, safety, and competition for parking?

To tackle traffic and movement issues, I’d take a balanced approach that considers all road users. This means improving pedestrian safety with better crossings and walkways, like introducing a “scrambled crossing” at the intersection of Swan and Cremorne Streets, which would allow pedestrians to cross safely in all directions at once. I’d also support expanding cycling infrastructure and enhancing public transport connections to reduce reliance on cars. Parking remains a challenge, especially with ongoing developments, so I’d look into smart parking technologies to manage demand more effectively. Additionally, traffic calming measures and reduced speed limits in residential areas are necessary to ensure safety and preserve the character of our neighbourhoods.

3.            What opportunities do you see for creating additional public spaces in Lennox Ward?

As Lennox Ward becomes more densely populated, the need for additional public spaces grows. One opportunity is to use developer contributions not only for enhancing existing spaces but also for purchasing and repurposing underutilised or underdeveloped properties. This could open up more green areas or community spaces. For example, we could look at properties near development zones that could be turned into pocket parks or community hubs. I’d also advocate for expanding existing spaces like Barkly Gardens and connecting them with nearby areas to make public spaces more accessible to residents.

4.            Lennox Ward contains a varied mix of residential and commercial properties with a recent and growing inclusion of large multi-storey developments. What tensions or opportunities do you see here, and how would you address them?

Striking a balance between commercial growth and residential livability is crucial. I’m in favour of commercial developments that respect the character of our residential areas and contribute positively to the local economy. However, we need stricter guidelines to ensure that new multi-storey developments don’t overwhelm the area or reduce its livability. There are opportunities for sustainable building designs that enhance green spaces, include community facilities, and offer affordable housing. My goal is to manage growth in a way that benefits both residents and businesses, while preserving the heritage and character of the area.

5.            There is currently a draft Urban Design Framework for Cremorne. What would you prioritise, and also apply to other parts of Lennox Ward?

The Cremorne Urban Design Framework rightly focuses on sustainable development, enhancing public spaces, and improving transport connectivity. I would prioritise upgrading pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, particularly to create safer, more accessible routes to Richmond and East Richmond stations. I’d also push for expanding green spaces and tree planting initiatives across Cremorne and other parts of Lennox, like Richmond Hill. It’s important that development respects the area’s heritage while meeting environmental goals, such as zero-carbon buildings, which I’d advocate for across the ward.

6.            Could waste collection be done better, particularly in the context of the tight narrow streets and varied zones in Lennox?

Yes, waste collection can definitely be improved. We need tailored waste solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial areas, which could include communal bins and compactors for businesses. It’s vital that any changes to waste collection prioritise convenience for residents, while keeping our streets accessible and clean.

Summary

I’m dedicated to strengthening our community through transparency, accountability, and meaningful engagement with residents. I want to live in a place that I can be proud of and that supports everyone who lives and works here.

My top priorities are improving governance processes, fiscal responsibility and supporting local businesses. I’ll ensure that development is both sustainable and respectful of our area’s character, creating a future we can all be proud of. With your support, I’ll make sure the Council listens to residents and acts in the best interest of our diverse community.
