Meet the Lennox Candidates

Yarra Ward Boundaries

In October we will be asked to vote for our representative on the Yarra City Council.

But who are the candidates?

To help you out, Cremorne Community Inc. invited the candidates for the Lennox ward, which covers Cremorne, Richmond South and Richmond Hill, to introduce themselves and answer our questions.

Here is the recording of the forum held at the Cherry Tree Hotel, on 2nd October 2014

We also asked candidates to send through their written resonses. Follow the links to learn more:

  1. Regarding waste/recycling/bins, it’s important to remember that a lot of the new requirements including 4 kerbside bins are imposed by the state government, see here:
    https://www.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2022-06/DELWP_CE_Factsheet_CE-Act_V3%20FINAL%20%281%29_0_1.pdf

    And here:

Council can set pickup schedules, but if they want to opt-out of 4 bins for each household, they have to apply to state gov for an exemption and justify on the basis of sufficient alternative drop off locations etc. It sounds like a fair bit of red tape to get this happening.

  2. I didn’t see the words “opt-out” in the factsheet you provided. Also the document in the link you provided is a draft version, not final, so the process hasn’t been signed-off.

If the State Govt didn’t deem it possible why would they have provided a process?

    • Yes service standard is currently draft, it just went through consultation process. The standard will sit under the Act, which is already in force. There may be some amendments before it is finalised – I wonder if council or any candidates made a submission?

The opt-out is in the draft service standard, it describes eg households can opt out of FOGO bin if they have their own composting system (this is consistent with current Yarra arrangement).

Council can’t opt-out of the 4 stream system overall, they must follow the Act. They can only apply for specific exemptions eg if not enough space for bins then they need to make alternative drop off arrangements and then state gov has to approve this as an exemption.

I didn’t say the process wasn’t possible, I said the state gov has to approve any exemptions which the council has to apply for – in other words, we as a community can’t just say ‘we don’t want this system’, as council/councillors don’t have the final say.

You can also read the original Act (in force) here:
      https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/as-made/acts/circular-economy-waste-reduction-and-recycling-act-2021

      • You seem to be obsessed with a draft version of State legislation, that by your own admission, councillors have no influence over whatsoever in a councillor debate?
In our street the Fogo experiment has been a disaster with only one household out of 38 having one. I have ten wormeries so I was simply forced to pay the levy of having one so that Sue Wilkinson could avoid implementing the AtticusNow recommendations.
